about Us
Our Mission
Seeking to put God’s love into action, Habitat for Humanity of Franklin County brings people together to build homes, communities, and hope.
At HFHFC, our mission is to provide affordable housing solutions for low-to-moderate income families and eliminate substandard housing in Franklin County. By partnering with the community, we make safe, decent affordable housing a reality for our neighbors in need. We build strength, stability, and self-reliance through shelter.
Our Vision
A world where everyone has a decent place to live.
Our Principles
- Focus on shelter: Our primary work is to provide safe, decent and affordable housing.
- Advocate for affordable housing: We work to change policies and systems that prevent access to safe and affordable homes.
- Promote dignity and hope: We believe every person deserves to be treated with dignity and that a stable home provides hope for a better future.
- Support sustainable and transformative development: Our work helps foster strong, stable communities that can thrive for generations.
Our Story: Over 30 Years of Changing Lives
Habitat for Humanity of Franklin County, VA, has been changing lives for over 30 years. Founded in 1994, our affiliate was managed solely by dedicated volunteers until 2018. As an all-volunteer organization, we built and renovated 23 homes for our neighbors in Franklin County. With the increasing need in our community and the growing financial challenges faced by non-profits, we realized the need to be strategic thinkers and planners to better serve our community’s needs.
- 2018: We moved our ReStore from a small basement location to a 10,000 sq. ft. retail location on Franklin Street. This move allowed us to significantly expand our capacity.
- 2019: We hired our first Executive Director. This leadership helped us stay current with the ever-changing construction, mortgage, and non-profit environment.
- 2022: For the first time in our affiliate’s history, we broke ground on two new homes in a single fiscal year, marking a significant step forward in our mission.
- 2024: We launched our Brick by Brick initiative, an annual fundraiser that has generated over $300,000 for affordable housing here in Franklin County.
Our Impact and Future Plans
Since our inception, we have built 24 new homes, rehabbed 3 homes, and completed over 45 critical repairs, providing long-term, affordable housing solutions for Franklin County. As the only organization in the county addressing the need for permanent, affordable, and occupant-owned housing units, we are committed to building strength, stability, and self-reliance through shelter. We collaborate closely with community volunteers, sponsors, donors, and prospective homeowners to make this a reality.
Looking ahead, we are focused on strategic growth to serve more families:
- Scaling Up Production: Our goal is to increase our affordable housing production from 1-2 homes per year to 3 homes per year and our critical home repairs from 5-7 repairs per year to 15 repairs per year by fiscal year 2028.
- Expanding Our Footprint: We own two properties in Rocky Mount totaling 17 acres. We have completed engineering studies and site plans for the smaller parcel, with studies underway to design a future Habitat community on the other. This expansion will allow us to serve families more quickly and efficiently.
- Raising Capital: We are actively raising capital to ramp up production and bring these ambitious plans to life. By expanding our Critical Home Repair program and developing our larger properties, we strive to become the primary developer of affordable housing for all of Franklin County.
With the continued support of our community, we are confident that we can build more homes, transform more lives, and create a better future for our neighbors in Franklin County.
